Abstract

The purpose of this study was to identify the level of burden and quality of life of
car egivers of inpatients.
The subjects of this study were 143 caregiver s who obtained from three university
hospitals locat ed in Taegu.
The data were collected from April, 1 to April, 30, 1999 using a structured questionnaire.
In the questionnaire, two instruments were used : Lee (1993)¡¯s instrument for the burden
of caregivers and No (1988)¡¯s instrument for the level of quality of life.
The data wer e analyzed by using SAS program with frequency , percentage, mean,
t - test , ANOVA and Pearson Correlation Coefficient .
The results of this study were as follows :
1. The mean score of the burden of caregivers was 68.53. The score for T ime- dependance burden was the highest, which is followed by physical, financial, developmental burden among the 6 dimensions.
2. The mean score of quality of life of car egivers was 123.43. T he scor e for self- esteem
was the highest, which is followed by family relationships, neighborship, physical state
and function among the 6 dimensions.
3. There was significant negative correlation (r =- 0.49, P=0.001) between the burden of
caregivers and quality of life.
4. The burden of caregivers was significantly related to the gender of caregiver (t=0.31,
P=0.012), time spent with patient a day (F =4.21, P=0.006), the duration as acaregiver
(F=2.82, p=0.013), living with a patient (t=- 0.608, P=0.039), perceived patient¡¯s acuity
(F=4.100, P=0.018), and the level of the Activity of Daily Living of patient.
T he quality of life was significantly related to the familial relationship (F =2.340, P=0.004)
and the duration as acaregiver (F=2.580, P=0.021).
In conclusion, this study identified the negative relationship between the burden and
quality of life of caregivers. Therefore, it is recommended that nurses have to develop
str ategies to reduce the burden of caregiver s and to improve the quality of life of
car egivers.
